How to create a segment

Segments are a powerful tool for understanding subscriber engagement by organizing your audience based on attributes and activity.

After creating a new segment for your audience, each segment will have its own dashboard where the collected data is aggregated. This makes it easy to track the statistics at a glance as your segments progress. There are three types of segments that you can create: static, dynamic, and manual.

beehiiv segment types

Static: This type creates a segmented group of subscribers based on specific conditions. Due to the conditions, a static segment is not automatically updated after creation, instead it’ll remain unchanged until updated as stipulated.

Dynamic: A dynamic or ever-changing segment allows you to set conditions for a group of subscribers that are automatically updated daily. This ensures that the segment reflects any changes in subscriber activity or attributes over time (removing subscribers when they no longer meet the requirements as well as adding them).

Manual: This option allows you to upload a list of subscribers manually. Unlike dynamic segments, manual segments are not automatically updated. They are based on a specific list of subscribers you choose to import and do not change over time.

How to create a segment

From the left hand panel in your account, go to Audience > Segments.

The Segmentation area of your account will load on the page, click on the Create Segment button found in the upper right corner.

You’ll be brought to a new segment form. Give the segment a name (required), and add a description (optional), then select the segment type (required); choose from Static, Dynamic, or Manual.

Static and Dynamic segments

For Static and Dynamic segments, you’ll need to click on the Define conditions button to get started.

Here’s where you can customize your segment by defining the conditions. Refer to the Segment Condition Charts below to see the full details of the segment conditions available to you.

Add as many conditions as you’d like to the segment, then be sure to click on the Save segment button when you are finished.

Once saved, you’ll be brought to the segment’s dashboard. If it was a dynamic segment, then upon creation you’ll see data right away. Otherwise, the data will aggregate after the segment runs.

To edit or delete a segment from its dashboard, click on the Configure tab. Here, you can add or remove conditions for the segment, or choose to delete the entire segment.

If you make changes to the segment, be sure to click on the Update Segment button when finished.

Manual segments

For Manual segments, you’ll need to click on the Add subscribers button, then be prepared to upload a CSV file or a list of email addresses to copy and paste.

For a new Manual segment, you’ll be prompted to select an import method, choose from a CSV file or to copy and paste a list of email addresses. For a CSV, click on the Choose File button and select it from your device.

Here, there is also the convenient option to Send welcome email to newly imported subscribers. Checking this box (as pictured) will automatically send your welcome email to any new subscribers from the list.

Tech Note: All subscribers being imported for segments must have knowingly consented and opted into your newsletter, otherwise you are at risk of violating our terms of use and privacy policy

When you have finished adding subscribers, click on the Save segment button.

You’ll receive a quick confirmation message that you’ll need to review, verifying that the new subscribers you are adding have knowingly opted into receiving email from you. Click Import to confirm.

Once saved, you’ll be brought to the new segment’s dashboard.

To edit or delete a segment from its dashboard, click on the Configure tab. Here, you can add new subscribers to the segment, add the segment to automations, or choose to delete the entire segment.

If you make any changes to the segment, be sure to click on the Update Segment button when finished.
